Diarrhea of the first days of life: information

The disease in brief

This is not a disease, but a group of problems that occur in the first days of a calf's life and that often combine to make a situation worse. This is therefore a herd situation, faced with losses in the first age. At this age, we can be faced with:

- Calves that were infected before birth, more or less premature/carrying anomalies: The research planned in the event of mass abortions must be undertaken.

-Slow and/or poorly monitored calvings: Calves suffer from anoxia, metabolic and respiratory acidosis, or hypothermia or all three combined.

- Colostral intake defects

-Hygiene problems at the calving site and nursery -1st age

Clinic & diagnosis

This is therefore a problem for a herd which is faced with calf mortality during the first days of life.

Prognosis and treatment

Find an epidemiological-clinical lead and implement the appropriate treatment method.

Prevention

Prevention must begin with a risk analysis to be done with the breeder and, together, you must make the choices of action; you must first:

-Check colostrum quality and freeze colostrum; HYVX-2

-Giving the right dose of colostrum at the right time: HYVX-3

-Also assess the sanitary quality of calf housing: HYVX-4

-A good drying off for a good calving: HYVX-6
