VX17_1 – diarrhea indigestion of milk in bucket-fed calves

Name of the disease in English
Diarrhea by indigestion in calves fed in bucket or auto calf feeder
The disease in brief
Calves that are fed by bucket by the farmer or by an automatic feeder are far removed from the small maternal suckling renewed at will: They sometimes receive quantities that are too large, breast milk that is too fatty (in the case of lipomobilization in the mother following a negative energy balance (NEB) that is too high postpartum), unsuitable milk replacer, or milk that is too cold, or they drink it too quickly. This results in diarrhea following milk indigestion. This diarrhea occurs at any age, and it can also accompany infectious or parasitic diarrhea.
Clinic & diagnosis
The problem is suspected when diarrhea occurs in calves fed with a bucket or DAL when two types of criteria are met:
-Criterion 1: White (and liquid) diarrhea, or common diarrhea, occurring at any age (no average age can be calculated, because patients have very variable ages), or milk distributed at a temperature <30°.
-Criterion 2: The problem evolves over several days, towards healing in more than 9 cases out of 10, or the calf has a good eye (no enophthalmos), or the problem recurs (with improvements and relapses).
D-lactic acidosis can also occur due to fermentation of undigested/unabsorbed nutrients in the large intestine.

Confirm a suspicion?
This is a malnutrition of calves that is always useful to correct. This disease can also accompany infectious or parasitic diarrhea in calves.
Prognosis and treatment
Treatment mainly consists of correcting the cause of the problems: See prevention
Treatment with an oral antidiarrheal is possible: correction of dehydration and acidosis (“paralytic gastroenteritis”)
Prevention
Calf feeding is a tedious job for the farmer or delegated to a machine that he more or less masters. The problem can come from the milk chosen, the distribution method, or human problems (no time, "I don't like it") or the quality of the water: See Memo HYVX9
-Either you give the file to the breeder
-Either you take the time to analyze the situation
