Name of the disease in English
Acidosis-Level 1 with Dehydration-1 in calf
The disease in brief
This is a clinical evaluation suspecting a condition combining incipient acidosis and incipient dehydration:
Level 1 of acidosis means that the acidosis state is not very advanced: We observe both movements or reflexes that slow down and normal movements or reflexes.
-Level 1 dehydration is characterized by the onset of enophthalmos: This dehydration corresponds to a loss of water estimated at 2-3% of live weight.
This is a very common condition in calves with diarrhea. To get out of this condition, an infusion must still be implemented if the safety of the treatment is to be increased.
Clinic & diagnosis
We suspect this state when we find on a calf both signs of mild or early dehydration and signs of mild or early acidosis :
–Dehydration beginners is noticeable by a mild enophthalmos, assessed by a sagging of 2 to 3 mm of the eye in its socket. The calf's mouth may be a little dry but it is hot; The fold of skin regains its shape in 3 to 5 seconds.
-An onset of acidosis : The calf appears normal on one or two criteria for evaluating acidosis and has one or two criteria indicating the onset of acidosis; these criteria showing the onset of acidosis can be:
-The calf is standing but it is unstable, corrects its posture; it almost falls if you push it slightly.
-His reactions are slowed down to auditory and visual stimuli.

Differential diagnosis
-Bacterial meningoencephalitis in newborns (Streptococci, Colibacillus ..) N417
-Ischemic-hypoxic encephalopathy of calves N217
-Neonatal calf sepsis N324
-Acidosis following neonatal anoxia NV25.1
Confirm a suspicion?
Bedside diagnostic tests can be done from a blood test (whole blood) to immediately assess electrolytes, blood gases and blood sugar.
Prognosis and treatment
The prognosis is guarded, depending very much on the control of the cause of the problem. Both acidosis and dehydration should be controlled by an infusion of 1 to 1.5L NaHCO3 1.4% + 1 to 1.5l of 0.9% NaCl combined with Glucose 5 or 30% according to the measured blood sugar.
Prevention
No specific prevention depending on the disease causing this condition.
