Ulcerative lymphangitis of cattle

The disease in brief

Limited contagion disease, due to skin infection with Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, producing nodular lesions on the limbs and lower half of the body.

Clinic & diagnosis

The disease is suspected by observing both:

-Nodules small (1 cm) in the thickness of the skin or subcutaneous nodules (1cm to 6 cm in diameter) deforming the skin without damaging it, distributed over the body (or isolated)

-Location : On the limbs or lower half of the body.

Differential diagnosis

 – Contagious bovine lumpy skin disease -N339

– Dermatitis caused by atypical mycobacteria -N303 

– Cutaneous (or subcutaneous) pyogranulomas/various causes -N300 

– Onchocerciasis -N169 

– Acute urticaria -DR30 

Confirm a suspicion?

Collect pus from a nodule, and ask the laboratory for bacterial isolation.

Prognosis and treatment

Treatment with injectable penicillin.

-For ulcerative lesions provide an antibiotic ointment.

Prevention

Limit the causes of skin aggression on hard floors

-Disinfect stables periodically
