Name of the disease in English

Pharynx paralysis

The disease in brief

Paralysis of the pharynx is characterized by the inability to swallow. It can have various origins: trauma most often, and more rarely it is a sign of rabies or botulism. Rare sickness. Significance very limited by the rarity of the disease, but rabies should be considered at first.

Clinic & diagnosis

It can be suspected when a cattle is hungry and tries to swallow in vain. A strong cough is observed when the cattle tries to swallow. Compression of the pharynx does not cause reflex swallowing. Cattle become dehydrated and lose weight in a few days. The risk of false swallowing is high. The disease is also suspected in a bovine which drools and cannot swallow, and which will reject merycic bowls.
