N135 - Poisoning by black nightshade, green potatoes Or another solaneus
Synonyms
Solanum nigrum = Black nightshade;
Name of the disease in English
Black nightshade / Solanum nigrum poisoning
The disease in brief
Black nightshade is a plant found throughout France around fodder crops, but its toxicity appears to be very variable and could depend on a variable concentration of toxic alkaloids (solanine, etc.) and on the nitrate content of the plant. often corn plots because it has become resistant to certain herbicides; poisoning occurs mostly in summer-autumn. This is the 4th cause of appeal to the CNITV-Ruminants.
The green potato is distributed to cattle in production areas, where cattle access plots containing tubers that have been abandoned or rejected for marketing. Since the starch in potatoes is poorly digestible, a hand brush will directly disrupt intestinal digestion. The potato is well tolerated if it is introduced gradually and in limited quantities; the proposed limits are 2 kg / 100 kg live weight for heifers and 3 kg per 100 kg live weight for adults, cattle with finishing fertilizer being able to exceed these limits.
Clinic & diagnosis
Signs leading to suspicion of poisoning are associations of symptoms, often in a group of cattle, such as:
- Diarrhea with colic or ataxia or tachypnea and mydriasis
- Despondency, a soft or drunken cattle, sometimes drowsy whose reflexes are reduced
-An impossible raise associated with signs of depression and reduced reflexes.
In case of suspicion, it is of course necessary to check whether the nightshade could have been consumed and consumed in sufficient quantity to confirm the suspicion.

Confirm a suspicion?
Cattle can easily be checked for albuminuria.
Prognosis and treatment
Il n’existe pas d’antidote, et le traitement est seulement symptomatique(Anti-diarrhéique).
The lethality recorded at the CNITV is 11% in sick cattle.
Prevention
Controlling the risk of poisoning with nightshade lies above all in cleaning the corn plots before harvest.
Controlling the risks associated with green potatoes consists in gradually introducing them into the ration while respecting the quantity limits of 2 kg / 100 kg of live weight for heifers and of 3 kg per 100 kg of live weight for adults, cattle at the finishing fertilizer may exceed these limits.
