Name of the disease in English

Special case or inconsistency/sucking reflex?

The disease in brief

In the condition of the calf as you have described it, we find an absence of response to the sucking reflex induced on a calf that appears "in good shape" otherwise: These evaluation elements with opposing results point for the first towards a serious state of acidosis, while the others point towards a good acid-base balance; we are not able to offer you a reliable suspicion. We must be careful and try to find the origin of the non-response to the sucking reflex by deepening the differential diagnosis of this anomaly: Paralysis of the motor muscles of the tongue? Painful stomatitis?

Clinic & diagnosis

The situation described seems incoherent to us: Is it a possible error in assessment? Or in input? Or does this anomaly hide a special case? EIn fact, we find an absence of response to a provoked sucking reflex, this absence is combined with a calf in “good shape”:

-Its tone is normal, the calf stands upright and is stable if jostled.

-His response to a provoked palpebral reflex is good: The closure of the eyelids is immediate and complete.

-His reactions to visual, auditory and painful stimuli are normal.

-His eye is well rounded, no enophthalmos is visible.
