Name of the disease in English

Bovine papular stomatitis; BPS

The disease in brief

It is a disease most often benign in young cattle due to a Poxvirus similar to or identical to that of pseudo cowpox (teat vaccine). The infection is widespread, in the majority of our herds, often going unnoticed. In the rare case of naive herds, the disease can spread and cause concern. Like the pseudo cowpox, disease is a minor zoonosis by the benign nature of the lesions it causes; some rare cases can be more serious.

Clinic & diagnosis

The shape of the skin lesions most often gives rise to a solid suspicion. We can add that this virus never causes inter-digitate lesion, unlike other more formidable viruses (BVD virus, foot-and-mouth disease, Blue tongue = FCO).

Differential diagnosis

-Vesicular stomatitis N274

-Acute mucosal disease DG44.5

-Mouth and mouth disease MC1

- Bluetongue (Bluetongue) MC2

-IBR RS18

-Coryza gangrenous RS31

Confirm a suspicion?

Confirmation is rarely requested. We can take “croutelles” in a sterile vial and ask a laboratory specializing in bovine virology to identify the virus by PCR (if available) or to isolate it by cell culture. An electron microscope observation is also possible.

Prognosis and treatment

No treatment necessary (or possibly local treatment), as the disease heals on its own.

Prevention

No prevention given the ubiquitous nature of the virus.
