Confirm a suspicion?
An ultrasound scan usefully complements the clinical examination to specify the lesions in place, their size and their location.
Prognosis and treatment
The prognosis should be modulated according to the size of the hernia, or in the event of suspected complications or according to the possible extension of the infection to deep structures.
Surgical treatment is essential to reduce the hernia and drain infected or necrotic tissue.
Prevention
Good ventilation of nurseries is the basic rule to limit bacterial development around calves.
Disinfection of the navel of newborns by soaking in iodine tincture is the gold standard practice.
Do not keep calves with hernia for replacement.
