Rib fracture

The disease in brief

Rib fracture is an accident that is not uncommon in all herds, and especially in buildings with metal tubing. Most are asymptomatic, it is not uncommon to palpate bone calluses. (Palpation on an animal of several bony calluses: costal chain, should however lead you to suspect a nutritional deficiency)

The most serious cases are detected initially by locomotor disorders or respiratory disorders.

Clinic & diagnosis

The origin of rib fractures is traumatic or metabolic.

We suspect a traumatic origin by observing the sudden appearance of signs:

- either dominant respiratory order: a respiratory movement of very low amplitude, or abdominal breathing, without moving the ribs

- Dominant locomotor order: a bovine that is reluctant to move or lie down

- Or a combination of the two.

In addition to these signs, we can find air under the skin-Subcutaneous Emphysema-, traces of shock, or commemorations of cavalcades or wrestling.

A dietary deficiency / imbalance (Ca / P / protein dietary imbalance; Vit D deficiency, etc.) is suspected in the presence of a costal string (several bone calluses) often in growing animals not receiving AMV , in fast growing breeds.

-Endocarditis N16

Confirm a suspicion?

A confirmation, in the event of traumatic origin, can be obtained by a particular examination of the painful area; an ultrasound can provide confirmation.

Prognosis and treatment

The prognosis is good during traumatic origin; the treatment in cattle is limited to the prescription of anti-inflammatory-painkillers and to put the patient in conditions of improved comfort to await spontaneous recovery.

In case of food deficiency: review the ration.

Prevention
