The disease in brief

Disease notifiable to the OIE-2018

It is a virus disease transmitted by mosquitoes and other biting insects; this mode of transmission means that this African disease could by its broad power of extension reach European herds. It is a disease transmissible to humans.

The disease also affects all ruminants, rodents and monkeys.

This disease causes a high mortality of calves and young in the newly infected areas as well as numerous abortions.

Clinic & diagnosis

The disease should be suspected by observing both uncharacteristic symptoms and a course, more specific circumstances; the circumstances are:

-Large abortions occur in the herd or high mortality occurs in calves in the herd of sick adults.

-The disease has killed other cattle in the batch or the breeders or caretakers complain of suffering from flu-like symptoms (or worse).

Symptoms of suspicion are at the same time :

-Fever on the sick

-A collective evolution

-Varied and variable symptoms: Ptyalism, or throwing, or banal diarrhea, or hemorrhagic diarrhea, or serous diarrhea, or sticky-mucous diarrhea, or black diarrhea, or pale to yellow vaginal or conjunctival mucous membranes -pale (subicterus).

Confirm a suspicion?

The DSV authorities must be alerted; a blood sample on a dry tube should allow a confirmatory Elisa test to be performed.

Prognosis and treatment

Very poor prognosis; no treatment.
