Bovine petechial fever

Disease notifiable to the OIE-2018

This is a benign disease, probably transmitted by biting insects, which is prevalent in Africa (Kenya); it is caused by Ehrlichia ondiri and manifests itself by fever and the appearance of petechiae. The mode of transmission by insects is poorly understood, but it should be remembered that patients remain latently infected for 2 years; an adaptation to our European climates cannot therefore be excluded.

Clinic & diagnosis

The disease is suspected by observing both:

-Fever

-A collective evolution

-Petechiae on the conjunctival or vaginal mucosa

-Red or black bloody diarrhea, or epistaxis

Differential diagnosis

 – Purpura by acute BVD-PG17

– Acute poisoning by eagle fern-TX15 

– Ferula poisoning-N341 

– Intoxication/Aminoglycosides or other nephrotoxics-N25

– Hemorrhages due to anticoagulant raticides -PG18 

Confirm a suspicion?

Draw blood on anticoagulant (EDTA) to allow a histologist to observe characteristic inclusions in granulocytes and monocytes.
