Theileriosis

The disease in brief

Disease notifiable to the OIE-2018

Theileria are unicellular hemoparasites which cause diseases transmitted by ticks in many regions of the world: In France, we know Theileria buffeli (N45), a benign disease; but other Theileria produce serious diseases:

-T. parva causes serious problems in Central and East Africa: It is East coast fever, caused by T. parva and transmitted by the tick Rhipcephalus appendiculatus.

-T.annulata causes serious problems in Southern Europe, North Africa, Middle East, India and Asia: Mediterrannean cost fever transmitted by the Tick Hyalomma sp..

Cured infected cattle remain carriers and so do ticks.

These single-celled parasites multiply in lymphocytes, block capillaries, and then pass into red blood cells causing hemolytic anemia. The lethality can be high in a newly infected area depending on the treatments implemented.

Clinic & diagnosis

The disease is suspected by observing:

- Pale to pale yellow conjunctival or vaginal mucous membranes

-Fever

- Isolated or multicentric lymph node hypertrophies.

Differential diagnosis

-Theriosis caused by T. Buffeli N45

-Erythrocyte Anaplasmosis UR15.2

-Babesiosis UR14

-Babesiosis-Mixed infection-Anaplasma / and / or Theileria buffeli- / OR M.Wenyonii N9

-Mycoplasma weynyonii (Infection with) N33

-Poisoning by copper N23

Confirm a suspicion?

The authorities must be alerted via the DSV to know the official confirmation modalities. A blood test, carried out if possible on a peripheral vein (ear) with an anticoagulant tube (EDTA-Tube purple cap) will allow a histologist to confirm the disease or other hemoparasites.

Prognosis and treatment

Treatment is possible with buparvaquone, 2 to 5 mg / Kg bodyweight.

Prevention

The authorities must be alerted via the DSV to know the official control strategy chosen.
