Name of the disease in English
Acidosis-Level 1 with Dehydration-2
The disease in brief
This is a clinical assessment suspecting a condition combining incipient acidosis and marked dehydration:
Level 1 of acidosis means that the acidosis state is not very advanced: We observe both movements or reflexes that slow down and normal movements or reflexes.
-Level 2 dehydration is characterized by clear enophthalmos. This dehydration participates in the mechanism causing or aggravating the acidotic state by slowing down blood circulation and metabolism.
This condition is common because it accompanies diarrhea in young calves. To get out of this condition, an adjusted perfusion must be implemented.
Clinic & diagnosis
We suspect this state when we find on a calf both signs of clear dehydration and a sign of mild or early acidosis :
–Net dehydration is identifiable by a clearly visible enophthalmos, assessed by a subsidence of more than 4 to 5 mm of the eye in its orbit.
-An onset of acidosis : The calf appears normal on one or two criteria for evaluating acidosis and has one or two criteria indicating the onset of acidosis; these criteria showing the onset of acidosis can be:
-The calf is standing but it is unstable, corrects its posture; it almost falls if you push it slightly.
-His reactions are slowed down to auditory and visual stimuli.
-If we provoke an eyelid reflex, the closure of the eyelids is immediate, but it is incomplete.

Differential diagnosis
-Bacterial meningoencephalitis in newborns (Streptococci, Colibacillus ..) N417
Confirm a suspicion?
Diagnostic tests that can be performed at the bedside in rural medicine are more affordable. A blood test can be used to assess the main elements in the stable.
This precise assessment is valuable for choosing solutions at this level of severity.
Prognosis and treatment
The prognosis is quite favorable, if the cause of the problem is controllable. It is advisable to combat both acidosis and dehydration by an infusion of 1.5L NaHCO3 1.4% + 3.5l of NaCl 0.9% or Glucose 10 or 20% depending on the blood sugar level measured.
Prevention
No specific prevention depending on the disease causing this condition.
