Name of the disease in English

Renal amyloidosis

The disease in brief

The disease is caused by excess deposits of insoluble proteins in tissues, called amyloid. Most often, fragments of serum precursor proteins are the cause. Many organs can be affected by this extracellular deposit, including the kidney. The cause may be the consequences of chronic suppurative lesions, or chronic infection; in many cases the origin of the problem remains unexplained.

Clinic & diagnosis

No description

Differential diagnosis

-Paratuberculosis DG44

-Pyelonephritis UR13

-Chronic interstitial nephritis N63

Confirm a suspicion?

Urinalysis is already an objective confirmation of renal failure.

Prognosis and treatment

There is no treatment.

Prevention

No specific prevention; good herd health management is the basis for preventing these rare complications.

Clinic & diagnosis

Renal amyloidosis manifests itself in an adult ruminant by the appearance of diarrhea, accompanied by edema of the trough or the entrance to the chest. The bovine has lost weight, and everything contributes to a clinical picture that may suggest paratuberculosis. A urine analysis shows marked to severe proteinuria.
