The disease in brief
We have grouped together here the numerous poisonings which cause drooling; you can search for:
–Insecticides: organophosphates or carbamates, pyrethroids, avermectins.
–Herbicides and fungicides : Calcium cyanamide, imidazoles, molluscicides including metaldehyde
-Fertilizer : Nitrate and nitrites, phosphate, urea and ammonia
- Venomous animals: Caterpillars and toads
-Plants : Arums, Large and small hemlocks, Colchicums, Rapeseed, Poppy, Euphorbias, Sabine juniper, Mustards, Cockle, Poppy, Potato, Marsh marigold, Buttercups, Thuja, Verâtre
-Fungi and mycotoxin : Clitocybe of the olive tree and Inocybe of Patouillard and slaframine (mycotoxin produced in clover).
Clinic & diagnosis
Ptyalism may be suspected to be related to poisoning when it is observed with:
-A sudden appearance
-High lethality
-When the cattle has had access to unusual plants for a cattle or has been deprived of fodder by drought or snow
-Mydriasis
-A stagger
- Colic
-Restlessness, or tremors or myoclonus, or drowsiness
-A vomit
