Name of the disease in English

Chronic sinusitis

The disease in brief

Chronic sinusitis (inflammation of one or more sinuses) follows acute sinusitis which may go unnoticed.

Clinic & diagnosis

Diagnosis is more difficult than that of acute sinusitis. Clinical signs appear weeks or even months after dehorning (up to 1 year). Chronic sinusitis can develop in the absence of dehorning.

The main signs are:

  • decreased appetite with a gradual loss of condition,
  • an absence of febrile syndrome or intermittent hyperthermia,
  • an abnormal attitude of headache: animal immobile, rests its head on the feeder, sometimes slight rotation, head tense or very low,
  • the presence of an often unilateral thick intermittent purulent discharge (pus discharge).

Differential diagnosis

The most common diagnostic errors are:

– traumatic reticuloperitonitis (pain, thinness)

– certain CNS disorders (encephalitis, half-closed eyelids may suggest listeriosis)

Confirm a suspicion?

The correct action to arrive at a diagnosis is to CUT THE HORN (to release pus or gas).

Prognosis and treatment

Reserved. Neurological complications (meningitis, dural abscesses, etc.) are possible. Facial abscesses, exophthalmos, and tetanus are described.

Cut the horn, trephine the frontal sinus and drain.

Prevention

Detect and correctly treat sinusitis in its acute phase.
