Heat stress and heat stroke

The disease in brief

High ambient temperature can cause significant production losses and severe mortality in poorly managed transport, fan failures, or in cases of intense exercise in the sun or the transition from cool to warm. Treatments with iodine and levamisole can promote heat stroke.

Clinic & diagnosis

Normal but accelerated respiratory movements leading to acute respiratory distress in cattle kept in a warm, poorly ventilated closed room or outdoors in the absence of shade with strong sunlight are enough to suspect heatstroke. The temperature can exceed 42°C, the heart races, cattle that were initially mobile will become indolent, lie down and die.

Confirm a suspicion?

Symptoms and circumstances often dispense with a method of confirmation that does not really exist.

Prognosis and treatment

– Remove the cattle from the source of excessive heat, for example by bringing them under shelter

– Apply cold, for example, spray them with water, mist them, give them cold water enemas

– Give them something to drink

– Possible infusion of isotonic saline or glucose solution at 5%

– Manage stress that can cause heat stroke
