Oral candidiasis, moniliasis

The disease in brief

It is an infection of the calf's mouth by yeasts of the genus Candida which causes this disease; uncommon, with some exceptions, and therefore of limited importance. It does not usually spread in the herd.

Clinic & diagnosis

The observation of stomatitis in a calf with yellowish deposits or superficial cracks in the tongue should raise suspicion of the disease.

-Croupal stomatitis DG12 - Stomatitis by foreign body or burn by caustic or stinging DG16

Confirm a suspicion?

Swabbing the lesions in the mouth allows the laboratory to confirm the disease, either by culture or by microscopic observation of Candida.

Prognosis and treatment

The treatment is carried out by local application of mouthwash based on antimycotics, generally intended for dog-cats, based on enilconazole or only potassium permanganate (aqueous solution 1p 3000)

Prevention

No specific prevention apart from food hygiene; also check the correct use of antibiotics in the farm.
