Vesicular stomatitis
The disease in brief
CATEGORY 1 HEALTH HAZARD - OIE
It is an important viral stomatitis, because even if it is rife only in America, its resemblance to foot-and-mouth disease forces us to know of its existence; it affects Equidae, in addition to cattle and pigs. The virus can be introduced by infected ruminants, but also by vector insects (mosquitoes, blackflies, etc.), by embryo transfer.
The disease may turn out to be a zoonosis, but it is still mild.
Clinic & diagnosis
Fever and vesicles or lesions secondary to their rupture in the mouth, on the teats or the interdigitated space may suggest the disease, such as foot-and-mouth disease. The disease takes a collective extension, but is cured in 3-4 days.

Confirm a suspicion?
The declaration of suspicion is mandatory. It is the agents of the DSV who will take the samples (blood for serology).
Prognosis and treatment
Treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs such as NSAIDs can help healing, which occurs spontaneously within a few days for less serious lesions.
Prevention
To avoid too wide an extension, milk affected cows last. Opt for iodine-based milking hygiene products.
