Name of the disease in English
Penile hematoma
The disease in brief
Injuries during mounting can produce hematomas that may prevent the penis from retracting. In the longer term, penile hematomas cause abscesses, restricted penile extension, or incomplete erection, or finally penile deviation. It is therefore essential to intervene early on these injuries before the future of the breeder is totally compromised.
Clinic & diagnosis
A penile hematoma is suspected when a lump on the sheath is observed, the size of an orange to a melon.

Differential diagnosis
-Penis injuryN11
-Abscess near the penis N18
-Infectious balanoposthitis N10
Confirm a suspicion?
Tranquilize the male with xylazine,
Perform a complete examination of the penis at the same time as antisepsis to confirm the presence of a hematoma, its location (in the corpus cavernosum or under its envelope), the presence of additional lesions.
Prognosis and treatment
For a breeding bull, the goal of treatment is to return to stud. Surgical treatment that will evacuate the hematoma has a better chance of success.
Medical treatment is possible especially for non-breeding males; it includes an anti-inflammatory….
and antibiotic treatment:
-Surgical treatment allows the blood to be evacuated from the hematoma, and the membrane to be sutured in order to reduce the risk of recurrence. An antibiotic treatment is put in place based on penicillin:
Prevention
Keep bulls in safe enclosures.
To prevent falls and mating difficulties, avoid bulls that are too heavy for small females, and mounting females that are not ready for mating.
To avoid slipping when riding: Maintain the bulls' feet and ensure the limbs are in good health; avoid slippery floors
