Deep abscess of the navel-To be specified
The disease in brief
Navel infection does not always remain superficial:
-If the infection spreads to the veins connecting the navel to the liver, they can cause phlebitis (omphalophlebitis) and liver infection and abscesses.
–If the infection spreads to the urachal canal, umbilical arteries and bladder, it can cause urachitis, omphaloarteritis and bladder infection.
It is often after the age of one month that we observe the signs of this deep infection, while the navel may appear normal in its external part.
Clinic & diagnosis
The problem is suspected when transabdominal palpation of the navel is painful or reveals a mass that is in a central position above the navel.
The affected calf has often lost weight, or shown an irregular appetite; there is sometimes a history of umbilical infection.

Confirm a suspicion?
The lesion observed can be specified with an ultrasound.
Prognosis and treatment
Medical treatment may be attempted if the infection is recent, which is not often the case; it is done with broad-spectrum antibiotics for a period of at least 2 weeks.
Most often the treatment must be surgical, it will remove the infected-necrotic parts.
Prevention
-Review the housing of newborn calves: HYVX-4
-Fix discovered issues
