Name of the disease in English
Bursitis on the neck
The disease in brief
Neck bursitis is an injury caused by the neck rubbing against the tubing of the feed bars of troughs, pens and feed stalls. The bursitis consists of a shell of fibrous inflammatory tissue containing serosity and coagulated debris.
Clinic & diagnosis
The problem is suspected by observing a lump on the top of the neckline. It is also noted that this swollen area is firm in consistency, not painful, and traces of shock and pressure are visible on the skin.

Differential diagnosis
- “Cooled” abscess under the skin CH1.4
-Hematoma under the skin CH3
-Minimally invasive tumor type Histiocytoma N321
Confirm a suspicion?
The lesion observed can be specified with an ultrasound. A puncture is another possible means of confirmation, with a risk of post-operative infection. If it is essential, prepare the area to be punctured as for a surgical procedure. A 16g needle will be able to immediately confirm the presence of blood (or pus); aspiration with a syringe may be useful in addition. Remove the needle and squeeze the punctured area.
Prognosis and treatment
It is not advisable to drain bursitis, but rather to remove the cause of the trauma first; many bursitis will reduce spontaneously if the cause is removed. Others will develop into abscesses that must be drained.
Prevention
Arrange access to the troughs to avoid this friction on the top of the neck.
